What does the election mean for tech?

Unless you live under a rock, there was some pretty big news this week: the U.S. picked its next president.

Naturally, there’s a lot of speculation about what a new administration means for, well, everything. But we’re tired AF so let’s just focus on predictions for the tech industry for today, k?

Since Trump is a second-time president, we’ve already gotten a peek into what 2025 could mean for some big tech players. In a word: tense.

In the past, he clashed with Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, and Meta. Buuuut, more recent events suggest they could go from frenemies to BFFs. Who knows?

Here are some predictions from around the internet about how a Trump presidency will impact the tech sector:

🔮 Lina Khan will step down as head of the Federal Trade Commission. Apparently, Trump isn’t a fan (and neither is Big Tech), so this could make some industry leaders pretty happy. We’ll have to wait and see who is appointed to the FTC to see what this means for antitrust enforcement. (via Fortune)

🔮 Tech executives will try to get on the Trump administration’s good side ASAP. Especially because those who stood up to Trump in his first term weren’t treated too fondly. (via NYT)

🔮 If you’re already tired of hearing about cryptocurrency, strap in bucko. The crypto industry was extremely invested in this election, hoping to get a pro-crypto candidate in the White House. Well, it worked – and many are expecting big changes to crypto regulations. (via TIME)

🔮 Will we say hello, goodbye to the TikTok ban? Despite signing an executive order to try to shut down TikTok in his first term, earlier this year Trump said he’ll help “save TikTok for America.” (via The Hill)

🔮 Expect immediate changes to federal AI policies. Trump says he will scrap Biden’s 2023 executive order that outlined comprehensive genAI regulations. Some say this is good for innovation, while others say it’s a big risk. (via Ars Technica)

The only thing that won’t change? The fact that everything in tech changes super fast and all the time 🫠

Uhh, WTF is happening in Germany right now?

First off, you might be wondering why TF you should care about what’s going on in Germany right now. Good question!

Germany has the 3rd highest GDP per capita in the world, right below China. As smart and sassy business people, we wanna know what’s going on with them, right?

Ok, here’s the deal:

Chancellor Olaf Scholz just fired his finance minister, Christian Lindner, after disagreements over the country’s weak economy.

That led Lindner to withdraw his party, Free Democrats Party (FDP), from a three-party coalition that was basically keeping the government aligned – even though the three parties are quite ideologically different.

Without this coalition, the two remaining parties don’t have a majority rule in the Bundestag (that’s German for “parliament”). So this little spat between Scholz and Lindner isn’t reconcilable. 💔

Get this: Scholz even told reporters that Lindner’s “egoism is totally incomprehensible.”

oh snap

Scholz said he’ll call a vote of confidence for January, which means the parliament would vote on if they think Scholz is fit to remain in this position of power. That could lead to a snap election to take place by March, 6 months earlier than the planned September election. This would most likely lead to a new government coalition that’s laser-focused on strengthening the economy.

Looks like lots of eyes are gonna be on Germany in the coming months.
